    I was our teachers’ union president for several years and had a good,working relationship with the Superintendent. In the last recession, we were looking at 12-15 layoffs. With hard work and cooperation, the layoffs were avoided. We were also dealing with performance reviews of veteran teachers. As difficult as it was, some teachers were not offered contracts. Union do not protect teachers who need help. They simply ensure that they will be treated with dignity and due process.
