Effective teachers  are made over time, through education, perseverance, practice and guidance, writes Seattle Education Association President Jonathan Knapp. “Newly minted teachers may be shiny and bright, but teachers with experience connect with students. They are the coin of the realm for student achievement. It takes time to get from here to there.” Source: Seattle Times

  1. Dr Ken Alston says:

The topic “Good teachers are made, not born” is frankly not an either/or situation. Clearly every teacher can benefit from professional development. No one enters the profession as “fully trained”. However, there certainly are those for whom teaching comes far more easily… call it born to teach, call it excellent human relations, call it personality but there is something special in certain people that enable them to relate naturally to pupils/students and from day one be successful teachers. But perhaps the issue worth further debate is what defines a really good teacher.

  2. teachers born with their teaching talents or can they learn to become more effective? What’s the difference between “good” and “great” teachers? Recent research into the development of “greatness” in many fields strongly supports the idea that in-born talent is not the determining factor in high levels of performance (Shenk, 2010, Colvin, 2008, Gladwell, 2008).

  3. SOME people think that good teachers are born; educators know that good teachers are made. They are made over time, through education, perseverance, practice and guidance. Newly minted teachers may be shiny and bright, but teachers with experience connect with students. They are the coin of the realm for student achievement.
