Plus it limits deep understanding of concepts and standards. It encourages only grazed over learning and test taking strategies over mastery of curriculum. Many topics are not being taught due to not being tested. There is a severe limitation of thinking and discussion/literacy capabilities anyway in the students I have been seeing over the last ten years and this is not helping.

I can not tell you how many times i have talked with the year’s before teacher over a student only to be told, “but he did so well on all his tests last year.” Yet the student can not count to ten or write a simple sentence. Please do not take that as I am blaming the teacher. Newer teachers are doing exactly what is being asked of them and experienced teachers are leaving.

“Yet the student can not count to ten or write a simple sentence.” This is a sad and disturbing side effect of standardized testing.
